Lata Mangeshkar ‘Queen of Melody’ Passes Away: India Mourns Loss of Its Nightingale

Lata Mangeshkar, Queen of Melody (92) passed away due to multiple organ failure in Mumbai on Sunday morning. ‘Nightingale of India’ Lata Mangeshkar breathed his last at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai at 8:12 am. Mangeshkar will be cremated at Shivaji Park with full state honours. Her mortal remains will be kept at her residence in Peddar Road from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Later, her body will be shifted to Shivaji Park at 4.30 p.m. for public darshan.

Lata Mangeshkar tested positive for Covid-19 on January 8, 2022 with mild symptoms and is being treated at the hospital. She was admitted to the ICU at Breach Candy Hospital, where she was treated by Dr. Pratit Samadani and his team of doctors. The popular singer improved until last week, but her health deteriorated and she was placed on ventilator support on Saturday morning. The singer is also being treated for pneumonia. On Saturday, several dignitaries including Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar and NCP leader Supriya Sule visited the hospital to check on the singer.

Lata Mangeshkar, daughter of Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti Mangeshkar was born in Indore. Mangeshkar has been the voice of screen ideals for generations. She began her career in 1942 at the age of 13 and has sung over 30,000 songs in several Indian languages ​​over a seven-decade career.

Her first successful song was Dil Mera Thoda, for the 1948 film Mazboor. The following year, in 1949, Lata Mangeshkar became hugely popular with the Aayega Ane Wala track from the Mahal starring Madhubala. Since then, she has never looked back for Mangeshkar, becoming one of the most famous singers in the history of Indian cinema and music.

Her last full album was for the late filmmaker Yash Chopra-directed 2004 film ‘Veer Zaara’. Mangeshkar’s last song was ‘Saugandh Mujhe Is Mitti Ki,’ which was released on March 30, 2021, as a tribute to the Indian Army. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in 2001.

Lata Mangeshkar was also the recipient of several awards including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Dada Saheb Phalke Award, and multiple National Film Awards.

Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo” (lit. “O’ people of my country”) is a patriotic song written in Hindi by Kavi Pradeep, composed by C. Ramchandra, and sung by singer Lata Mangeshkar. The song commemorates Indian soldiers who died during the Sino-Indian War in 1962.

The song was first performed live two months after the war by Mangeshkar on Republic Day (26 January) 1963 at the National Stadium in New Delhi in the presence of President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
