Diwali 2023: A Journey Through 5 Days of Celebrations Across India

Diwali 2023: Diwali or Deepawali is the most important festival of India which is celebrated 5 days long from Dhanteras to Bhai Duj. On this day, Lord Rama along with his wife Sita and brother Laxman returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana and completed 14 years of exile. Deepawali is the festival of light symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Day 1: Dhanteras

The word Dhanteras is obtained by joining two words, ‘Dhan’ meaning ‘wealth’ and ‘Teras’ implies 13th.

On the day of Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kubera who is the God of wealth, is worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi.

As per Drik Panchang, this year, the sacred festival of Dhanteras is being celebrated on 10 November 2023.

Day 2: Naraka Chaturdashi

Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated as the second day of the 5-day long Diwali festival – one of the most important festival for Hindus worldwide. Narak chaturdashi celebrates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon ‘Narakasur’.

Narak chaturdashi is also known as Roop Chaudas, Bhoot Chaturdashi, Niraka Nivaran Chaturdashi, Chotti Diwali.

Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated in northern states, southern states, eastern status and western states with full enthusiasm and dedication

In West Bengal, Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Kali and known by the name of ‘Kali Chaudas’. Magnificent pandals for Maa Kali are created and a special puja is also performed.

On the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, Rangoli is created in doorways to welcome happiness and remove the evil spirits.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja

The Third Day is the main eve of the 5 days Diwali celebration gives the name of “Festival of Light”

The third day is Amavasya, the darkest day of the month new moon day.On this day everywhere Diyas, Kandil and colour lighting were done which make the day most significant.

Family members worship goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh puja together to welcome the goddess of wealth, fortune, prosperity to enter in their home.

In the Western part of India – West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, people worship the Goddess of Sakti Maa Kali.

Sweet, fruits and homemade cookies were shared to the neighbour and vice versa. Children are eagerly waiting for the firecracker and gifts from their parents.

Day 4: Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is celebrated a day after Diwali, that is the fourth day of the 5-day grand Hindu festival.Govardhan Puja is also known as ‘Bali Pratipada’, ‘Annakut Puja’, ‘Padwa’ or even ‘Gujarati New Year’. 

On this day Lord Krishna defeated Indra asked the people to worship nature.

Govardhan puja is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm in the states of Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In Gujarat, it’s celebrated as the start of a new year.

Bali Pratipada (Bali Padyami) is celebrated in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, the victory of Lord Krishna over demon king Bali.

Day 5: Bhai Duj

On the fifth day of Diwali, Bhai Duj is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the country

It is also known as Yama Dwitiya, Bhai Tika, or Bhai Bij.

On this day, sisters pray for their brothers to have long and happy lives by performing Tika ceremony and brothers offer gifts to their sisters.

Brothers promise to protect them in all situations. Sisters and brothers shares there love for each other and make the bond strong.
